Staff Council Membership
Members of the Staff Council are elected by Administrative Professional and Civil Service staff at Illinois State University to represent these employees in the University’s shared governance.
Council members advocate for staff interests by engaging with campus governance and leadership bodies such as the Academic Senate, Board of Trustees, Student Government Association, and other university groups. Members also serve in an advisory capacity, offering recommendations related to staff welfare, employment conditions, and workplace policies. In addition, the Council promotes open communication and information‑sharing between staff, university leadership, and the broader campus community.
Members of the Staff Council serve staggered three-year terms, with inaugural members serving one-, two-, or three-year terms to allow future elections to take place for a third of the council.
Council Composition
The Staff Council consists of 19 voting members drawn from the Administrative Professional and Civil Service employee classifications. The Council also includes ex officio members, as defined by Council governance documents.
Officers and Executive Board
Following the conclusion of Staff Council membership elections—and before the first meeting of the new Council year—a temporary Nominations Committee is formed. This committee is made up of Council members whose terms are ending and who are not seeking re‑election.
The Nominations Committee is responsible for coordinating nominations for Executive Board and representative roles. This includes:
- Accepting nominations from Council members
- Identifying and nominating eligible individuals if no nominations are received for a particular role
- Inviting nominees to submit a brief statement outlining their interest in the role and relevant qualifications (optional)
Election Process
Nominees are announced at the first meeting of the new Council year, where they have the opportunity to share their interest in and qualifications for the role.
- Elections are conducted by anonymous vote, overseen by the Nominations Committee.
- Members of the Nominations Committee do not vote.
- The nominee receiving the highest number of votes is elected.
- If only one individual is nominated for a role, a vote is not required.
